The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession by Amy StewartMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
Listened to the audio, which was not the best way to read this book. I have a print copy on hold and will reassess this book once I get a chance to view that copy.
January 2026 edit:
This is a book to be read via eBook or print copy. Audio is not the way to go. The text includes color drawings of each of the people who are profiled, and at times images of the trees and environment. The images are a big enhancement. The book is not like a typical linear style book, as it has many entries with very loose organization.
This book profiles people from around the globe that have a passion for trees. Each entry is fairly short, less than a page really. Most specialize in one type of tree, but not all. Some people collect trees, whether they actually own them or not. I'm still not certain how this is, maybe similar to bird watching, like collecting a list?
I was hoping the book was more in-depth than it was. Every entry was cursory, even the entries that expanded on a topic. I have read another of Amy Stewart's books before and it was of similar vein, so I should not have been surprised. Her books remind me of a specialized encyclopedia, but not exhaustive.
